Supporting Local on the Water: A Conversation with Brooks Finneseth of Coastal Angler Magazine – Lowcountry Edition

At Marine Detail Supply Charleston, we believe the Lowcountry boating and fishing community is built on something bigger than just boats and gear — it’s built on local people, local knowledge, and local businesses.

That’s exactly what makes Coastal Angler Magazine – Lowcountry Edition, led locally by Brooks Finneseth, such an important part of our community.

From Dockside Fishing Reports to a Coastal Staple

What started more than 25 years ago as a simple fishing report circulating around the docks of Cocoa Beach, Florida has grown into one of the most recognized publications in the marine and fishing industry.

Here in Charleston, the Lowcountry edition has deep roots. It was originally brought to the area by “Big” Mike Able, founder of Haddrell’s Point Tackle and Supply — a name well known throughout the local fishing community.

Today, under the direction of Brooks Finneseth, the publication continues to grow as part of a network of 24 regional franchises covering coastal markets across the country.

The Lowcountry edition spans the South Carolina coast from Awendaw to Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head — capturing what makes fishing and boating here so unique.

A Passion for the Lowcountry Community

For Brooks Finneseth, Coastal Angler Magazine is more than a publication — it’s a way to showcase the people and culture that define the Lowcountry.

After more than three decades in the advertising industry, including time with major newspaper groups, Brooks saw the opportunity as a way to connect more deeply with the coastal lifestyle.

“Having moved here from Kentucky about 14 years ago, we could have chosen many areas, but we landed here in the Lowcountry because we liked the landscape, the people, the customs, and the traditions,” Brooks says. “I really try to put a fresh energy on what is local and shine a light on that group.”

That commitment is reflected in every issue — highlighting not just fishing, but the businesses and individuals that make this region special.

Bringing Lowcountry Fishing to a National Audience

One of the most impactful aspects of Brooks’ work has been helping elevate Charleston’s fishery onto a national stage.

A standout moment came when he helped connect the Haddrell’s Point Tackle team with national writers, resulting in a feature on Lowcountry billfish action that ran across multiple markets — from the Florida Keys to Boston, Houston, and even the Virgin Islands.

“It planted the seeds of what we have to offer for new visitors headed this way,” Brooks explains.

That kind of exposure not only showcases the fishing — it strengthens the entire local marine industry.

Fishing the Lowcountry: Not Your Average Water

As Brooks quickly learned, boating and fishing in Charleston comes with its own unique challenges.

“When we first arrived, we were running a 20-foot Scout… a true country club lifestyle,” he says. “But what really stood out here is the tide swings and the amount of water that moves.”

With tidal swings approaching seven feet, conditions are constantly changing — affecting everything from fish movement to where you can safely anchor.

“Your nice anchor spot to catch some sun will quickly become a six-hour detour on a mud flat,” he adds.

It’s this kind of local understanding that separates Charleston from other boating markets — and why having trusted local resources matters.

The Power of Supporting Local

If there’s one message Brooks emphasizes daily, it’s the importance of supporting local businesses.

“Most every day I’m out in what I call the Angler Wrangler,” he says, referring to his Jeep wrapped in ocean and fishing graphics. “And if there’s one thing I bring up to everyone I speak with, it’s local businesses.”

“Without our local owners, our beautiful and very desirable slice of life and water would be just like everywhere else.”

Why It Matters to Marine Detail Supply Charleston

That same philosophy is at the core of Marine Detail Supply Charleston.

Just as Brooks and Coastal Angler Magazine highlight and support the local fishing community, we’re here to support the marine professionals, boat owners, and detailers who keep Charleston’s boats performing and looking their best.
