Marine Spotlight: Casts and Drafts

This month we’re spotlighting Casts and Drafts, a community meetup series that’s bringing Charleston’s fishing world a little closer together. The idea came from local guide Connor Bryant, who saw an opportunity to make the Lowcountry angling scene more approachable — and a lot more fun.

Connor, owner of Tidal Waters Guide Service, has been fly fishing since he was a kid and guiding in Charleston’s waters for years. “I’ve always enjoyed sharing this passion with others,” he says. “But it was clear to me and a few buddies that the local scene, while awesome, could feel a little closed off — especially to people who were just getting started.”

That’s where Casts and Drafts came in. Built around the idea of keeping things casual and inclusive, the meetups are designed to give anglers a place to connect without pressure or pretense. “We wanted something laid-back,” Connor says. “A space where you could talk fishing, meet new people, and have a beer after a day on the water.”

Each meetup is held at local breweries and waterfront hangouts around Charleston. Some locations have dock access, others offer a tucked-away marsh vibe, but all of them are intentionally laid-back and easy to reach. “We try to support small businesses that get what we’re about,” Connor explains. “Whether you’re coming by skiff or just swinging by after work, the idea is to keep it simple and welcoming.”

The results speak for themselves. From first-timers to full-time guides, people show up, connect, and keep coming back. “One of my favorite nights was when a newer fly angler came out on his own and left with the numbers of a few seasoned guys who offered to help him get dialed in,” Connor recalls. “That’s what this is all about — bridging the gap and making sure nobody feels out of place.”

The meetups are free and open to anyone with an interest in fly fishing, light tackle, boats, or just hanging out with people who love the water. “It’s not about ego,” Connor says. “It’s about building real connections that carry beyond the dock.”

The next meetup is June 28th at Freehouse Brewery. Come enjoy the drinks, the company, and catch up with MDSC! We’ll be there for all your detailing questions and product needs.
